Bethesda, Maryland
November 3-7, 1998

Sponsored by ACM SIGIR and SIGMIS

The Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (CIKM) provides an international forum for presentation and discussion of research on information and knowledge management, as well as recent advances on data and knowledge bases. The purpose of the conference is to identify challenging problems facing the development of future knowledge and information systems, and to shape future directions of research by soliciting and reviewing high quality, applied and theoretical research findings. An important part of the conference is the Workshops program which focuses on timely research challenges and initiatives.

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following areas:

  • Security techniques
  • Performance evaluation
  • Hypermedia
  • Unconventional applications
  • Parallel database systems
  • Physical and logical database design
  • Data and knowledge sharing
  • Interchange and interoperability
  • Cooperation in heterogeneous systems
  • Domain modeling and ontology-building
  • Knowledge discovery in databases

Traveling to CIKM'98

CIKM'98 will take place at the Holiday Inn/Crowne Plaza Hotel, located at 8120 Wisconsin Ave., in Bethesda, Maryland. (Bethesda is a suburb of Washington, DC.) Washington Ronald Reagan National Airport is 30-40 minutes from the hotel by taxi. Washington Dulles International Airport and Baltimore Washington International Airport are both about 40-45 minutes from the hotel by taxi. Cab fares will be in the $25-$30 range.

If you're driving from Dulles or National airports, follow I-495 (Capital Beltway) to exit 34 (Wisconsin Ave.) Rt. 355 South. Proceed south on Rt. 355 about two miles. The hotel is on the right (west) side of Wisconsin Ave., between Battery Lane and Cordell Ave.

The hotel is a short distance south of the Bethesda Metro stop, and the hotel shuttle bus can take you to and from the Metro. (One could get to the hotel from National Airport by Metro, but the trip could be lengthy, and we don't recommend this for attendees who are not familiar with the Washington area.)

Social Events at CIKM'98

There will be a reception on Tuesday evening, at the conference hotel. The conference banquet, scheduled for Wednesday evening, will be a dinner cruise on the Potomac River, aboard the Spirit of Washington! Transportation to and from the conference hotel will be provided.
